Top 5 Indie Horror Flicks You Need to Watch

Don't sleep on this golden age of horror!

It’s never a bad time to feel scared

Horror has seen a huge spike in popularity in the last decade. As things become more frightening in our day to day lives, we seek solace in make believe horrors. So, what better time than now to check out some of the best indie horror floating around the internet? We have cultivated a list of the most shocking and thoughtful indie horror films that will hopefully drown out the noise of those pesky phone notifications.

Ladies and gentlemen, please stay tuned for a live television first... as we attempt to commune with the devil. - Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil is a found footage film for the ages. The plot is fairly straightforward, a late night TV host tries to boost his ratings by bringing on a demonically possessed young girl. Obviously, things quickly take a turn for the worse as bizarre things begin to happen during the live broadcast.

What makes Late Night with the Devil stand out is its attention to detail. The set design and character development help to transport the audience back into the world of 70s broadcast television. While it might not be the scariest film on the list, it does provide a unique twist on the found footage formula.

In A Violent Nature

In A Violent Nature is a film made by horror fans for horror fans. If you have ever been curious as to what the slasher gets up to when the horny teens aren’t around, this is the film for you. Featuring some of the most brutal kills in recent memory, In a Violent Nature is a meta film without equal.

However, the film is somewhat divisive as watching a hulking manic walk through the woods for long stretches of time isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. That being said, if you are a fan of the OG slashers this is a can't miss film.

Skinamarink

Speaking of divisive, Skinamarink managed to both terrify and lull its audiences to sleep. A truly unique analog horror film Skinamarink follows two young children who discover that not only have their parents left them alone, but all of the doors and windows have disappeared from their home.

The film presents childhood abuse through the lens of cosmic horror and provides a viewing experience unlike any other. However, the film pushes the boundaries of normative storytelling and can be off putting to those looking for something more traditional.

Terrifier

The current reigning king of indie horror has to be Terrifier. This ultra violent film franchise has gone from hidden gem to blockbuster hit. Whether Terrifier has a cohesive story line is still hotly debated but what it does have is some of the gnarliest kills you will ever see on the screen.

What makes the franchise stand out is its slasher, Art the Clown. Never before in slasher history have we seen a villain that loves his work more. The team behind the franchise has managed to make vomit inducing death scenes fun and entertaining. If you want to alternate between looking away from the screen in terror and busting a gut laughing, go watch Terrifier.

The Void

The Void comes to us from a time when Lovecraftian horror was all the rage. While many films tried to capture the true dread of cosmic horror, The Void succeeded. Set in a rural hospital, what starts out as a small town drama quickly escalates into a full blown nightmare.

This film has all the hallmarks of a great Lovecraftian horror. We get tentacles, undying monsters, and a portal to another demission. While the film suffers from some wonky pacing, it still delivers one of the best cosmic horror experiences to date.
