WIP: Other SciFi > Characters & Craft

War of the Worlds - Tripod
One of the coolest re-designs of craft from a classic film. I really like the idea Speilberg had for the death rays. Reminds me of bug zappers even though that's not what they intended. I thought it worked beautifully.

Description:
Aside from a few details and touch ups im nearly down to the legs and heat rays!
Update 2

Description:
The texture is just the standard shined iron, i think, that is in the presets panel, it helped to show the details more than just a clay.
Update 3

Description:
The highlights on this preset are not brilliant, thats why it sometimes look like there are missing polys, the final should be a lot smoother.
Update 4

Description:
Still in two minds weather to practice uv(still not got the hang of it) or just come up with some proceduals, the symbols are stenciled in,tryin to keep a lot of realism to it, i nearly always stencil my details, teaches you how to tidy up and plan your mesh out,the only smoothing error i found so far was around the two circles on the nose, but they only seem to show on the clays.

Here is a little neck action.
Update 6

Description:
Got most the head done now, just all the small details to do and the work down the neck, think ive just aboutgot the hang of the rounding tool now, it can be a bugger to work with sometimes, and can crash a lot if you dont check your work for stray 1 and 2 point polys!

Description:
Got new REFS. I have now managed to get back to where i was,and far more happy with this version, so from here on in everything should be new!
Update 8

Description:
After using the reference hardcore supplied(thanks v much!) i managed to get a much better idea how it all fits together. was working away this week again so im nearly back to where i was, and this one is a lot cleaner and far less polys, only 50,000 so far, and this time i rememberd to model the underside befor the top got too far! the textures are just there for impression, not the finals!

Update 11

Description:
sorry chaps for the lack of updates, had a lot of family things goin on and probably for a while yet, but inbetween i have been doin a little work and here i hope is a large update, so dont worry i have not given up, as you can see the basic shape is now all there, as of yet no bones so i could not bend the feet into shape, back to clay renders as well as i didnt have time to change the surfaces again

Update 15

Description:
Well a bit of an update at last, all the modeling apart from the tenticals and camera tentical are now done, the cages took me a little while to figure out but i got it in the end,
Update 16

Description:
Not far off now with the camera tentacle, few fixes to do, then its the easy tentacles.
Update 17

Click for larger image
Description:
Stuck into texturing the beast, still no skellatons of yet so its just in its placement pose, but i can at last see the end coming, just a few missing polys here and there, well its hard to compleetly check a model of this size and get it right first time!
Update 18

Click for larger image
Description:
Well been messing with the leg chrome a bit today, seems to take more time than modeling when you have not had much experience! the first render is with a sky image, then a gradient backdrop as the previous renders, and then the same but with the image and proceduals reversed, ive also included the ref image incase you were thinking "I cant remeber there being chrome on the legs?" it only shows up in one sceen, which is what makes it harder to get right as chrome is affected so much by light and enviroment conditions.
Update 19

Click for larger image
Description:
Had a little play and this is what ive come up with, i simply put 3 lights in the middle, with 3 diff colours and then put a translucent map on the surface, the lights i excluded all objects except the layre that has the translucent surface and it seems to work nearly the same way.
Update 20

Description:
The more light you put above the more the translucent effect vanashis, in the film you can still sometimes see the frame work so it works out quite well.
